The creation of REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) in Norwalk, CT was a complex project involving new construction and renovation work to build a new, energy-efficient retail store for outdoor enthusiasts. The primary challenge was to create an open and customer-focused store format while integrating sustainable building practices, ensuring the fulfillment of REI’s commitment to environmental responsibility and high-performance retail stores.
Scope of Work
1. Site Development & Structural Work
• Existing Structure Modifications: The project involved the adaptive reuse of an existing commercial space, requiring significant structural upgrades to meet REI’s operational and aesthetic needs.
• Facade & Exterior Enhancements: The exterior was redesigned with modern finishes, large glass storefronts, and branded signage to create an inviting retail presence.
• Parking & Accessibility Improvements: Site work included resurfacing parking areas, enhancing pedestrian access, and ensuring ADA compliance for customer convenience.
2. Sustainable Building & Energy Efficiency
• LEED-Certified Construction Practices: The project adhered to green building standards, focusing on energy efficiency, water conservation, and environmentally friendly materials.
• High-Efficiency HVAC & Lighting Systems: The building was equipped with LED lighting, smart climate controls, and daylight harvesting systems to minimize energy consumption.
• Eco-Friendly Materials: Recycled and sustainable materials were used in flooring, fixtures, and finishes, aligning with REI’s sustainability goals.
3. Interior Build-Out & Retail Layout
• Expansive Retail Floor: The store layout was designed to provide ample space for showcasing outdoor gear, apparel, and equipment in an engaging and organized manner.
• Gear Rental & Workshop Areas: Dedicated spaces were constructed for bike repairs, equipment rentals, and in-store workshops, enhancing the customer experience.
• Community Space: A multi-purpose area was integrated for local events, educational programs, and outdoor adventure meetups.
4. Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing (MEP) Systems
• Advanced Fire Suppression & Safety Systems: The facility was equipped with modern fire alarms, sprinklers, and emergency lighting for maximum safety.
• Water-Efficient Plumbing Fixtures: Low-flow fixtures and rainwater collection systems were implemented to reduce water consumption.
• Solar-Ready Infrastructure: The building was designed to accommodate future solar panel installations to further support REI’s sustainability initiatives.
